The Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (OYOSUBEB) on Thursday distributed motorcycles to Monitoring and Evaluation Officers, to strengthen effective supervision of public basic schools across the State.

The brief ceremony took place at the OYOSUBEB Headquarters, Agodi, Ibadan, where Monitoring and Evaluation officers received the motorcycles on behalf of their Local Government Universal Basic Education Authorities (LGUBEAs).

The initiative is aimed at improving mobility, timely school visits and efficient monitoring of teaching and learning activities, particularly in hard-to-reach communities.

Speaking at the event, the Executive Chairman of OYOSUBEB, Dr. Nureni Aderemi Adeniran, said the gesture underscored the Board’s commitment to quality assurance and accountability in the basic education sector.

He noted that effective monitoring remained a critical pillar in achieving improved learning outcomes in Oyo State schools.

Dr. Adeniran explained that the motorcycles would enable Monitoring and Evaluation Officers to carry out their duties with greater ease, reduce delays in school inspections and enhance data-driven decision-making.

The OYOSUBEB boss also expressed appreciation to UBEC for its continuous support and partnership with the State in strengthening basic education delivery.

He acknowledged UBEC’s efforts in providing interventions that enhance supervision, and overall service delivery in basic schools.

Dr. Adeniran charged the beneficiaries to use the motorcycles responsibly and strictly for official purposes.

Adeniran further reiterated the Board’s zero tolerance for negligence, stressing that officers must ensure regular school visits, accurate reporting and prompt feedback to relevant departments.

In his remarks, the Coordinator, Forum of Monitoring and Evaluation Officers, Mr. Agbaje Adedeji expressed appreciation to the Board for the support, describing the intervention as timely and impactful.

The officers pledged renewed dedication to duty and assured the management of improved performance.

The symbolic distribution forms part of OYOSUBEB’s broader strategy to reposition basic education in Oyo State through strengthened supervision, infrastructure support and institutional reforms.

The Chairman of the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (OYOSUBEB), Dr. Nureni Aderemi Adeniran has extended his warmest congratulations to Oba Senator Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja on his confirmation as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland.

In a statement released by his media team, Dr. Adeniran described Ladoja’s confirmation as a testament to his dedication to the betterment of Ibadanland and its people.

He noted that his ascension to the revered throne is a reflection of the esteem in which he is held by the people of Ibadanland.

Adeniran added that his attainment to the throne is in fulfilment of destiny, being the first Olubadan to have served as a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and a former Governor of Oyo State.

Dr. Adeniran prayed for God’s guidance and wisdom for the newly confirmed Olubadan, wishing him a successful and fulfilling reign.

He also commended the Executive Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde for ensuring a seamless transition, after the demise of late Oba Owolabi Olakulehin.

Adeniran also applauded the Olubadan-in-Council and other stakeholders for their roles in ensuring a smooth transition.

The Oyo State Government has ordered about two hundred and two (202) teachers who were not integrated into the Post-Primary Schools Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM) to return to their Local Government Universal Basic Education Authorities, (LGUBEAs) without further delay.

Speaking during a meeting with Education Secretaries from 33 LGUBEAs, on Friday, the Chairman, Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board, OYOSUBEB, Dr. Nureni Aderemi Adeniran said the teachers, who are currently floating, risk their salaries being withheld if they do not comply.

He noted that while some of them did not meet up with the requirements for the transfer, others were affected by none vacancy at TESCOM.

Recall that the Oyo State Government absorbed about 2,000 primary school teachers, seconded to TESCOM by the previous administration in October 2022.

However, about 202 teachers who were not integrated into the post-primary school system, have refused to report back at their LGUBEAs or OYOSUBEB, despite being paid their salaries regularly, by the present administration.

Reacting, Dr. Adeniran said the teachers’ refusal to report at their LGUBEAS, means their appointments are not regularised.

He said, “All teachers not integrated into TESCOM who are refusing to return to OYOSUBEB, must report at their LGUBEAs with immediate effect.”

Adeniran frowned at the salaries being paid which does not commiserate with the number of teachers on the Board’s voucher, due to their refusal to report to classrooms.

He added that Governor Seyi Makinde had clearly stated in 2022 that the non-absorbed teachers should return to OYOSUBEB.

“Violating this order of the Governor is tantamount to gross misconduct”, he said.

He therefore ordered the immediate compilation of names, LGUBEAs, of the affected 202 teachers.

Additionally, Adeniran announced that the board in collaboration with the Universal Basic Education Commission, UBEC, has begun the School-Based Management Committee- School Improvement Programme (SBMC-SIP).

He said the SBMC-SIP encourages community participation and ownership of schools, through the disbursement of  funds directly to SBMCs for the improvement of infrastructure, learning materials and equipment in schools.

“The overall import is to increase access to education, qualitative education and achieving equity in the provision of Basic Education in Nigeria”, he said.

He appealed to the Education Secretaries to monitor the ongoing project, in their LGUBEAs.

The Chairman, Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board, OYOSUBEB, Dr. Nureni Aderemi Adeniran received the prestigious Most Distinguished Ibadan Indigene, MDII, Award on Saturday, for his contributions to the development of Ibadan land.

The award was presented by the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes, CCII, the apex body of socio-cultural clubs, societies, unions and associations of Ibadan indigenes in all spheres of life, home and abroad.

CCII had in a letter signed by its President-General, Chief Sulaiman Ajewole and Chairman, Ibadan Week Festival Planning Committee, Chief Abiola Alli, said the council was concerned and committed to the sustenance of cultural heritage and economic development of Ibadan land.

CCII said the award was in recognition of Adeniran’s contributions to the growth and development of Ibadan land.

Reacting, the Nigeria Union of Teachers and the Association of Primary School Head Teachers of Nigeria, AOPSHON congratulated Dr. Nureni Aderemi Adeniran, on the award.

The Chairman, Nigeria Union of Teachers, Oyo State chapter, Com. Raji Oladimeji said the award was well deserved, adding that it is a sign of recognition of Adeniran’s contributions to the development of basic education in Ibadan land and beyond.

Likewise, the Chairman AOPSHON, Oyo State, Com. Ilori Omoshola congratulated Adeniran, saying the award would spur him to do more for Ibadan land.

In his remarks, Dr. Adeniran expressed gratitude to the CCII leadership and members for the honor and praised Governor Seyi Makinde’s efforts in the basic education sub-sector.

The Oyo State Government has officially flagged off the enrollment of 10,000 basic school pupils into the State’s healthcare insurance scheme.

The children, enrolled from 90 schools across 18 LGAs were presented their Insurance scheme ID cards on Thursday at the Ibadan Civic center, Idi-ape, Ibadan, by the Deputy Governor, Barr. Bayo Lawal.

The Deputy Governor said the enrolment was part of the Oyo State Government’s effort towards ensuring its pupils are of sound minds.

He said, “This scheme will ensure that our children have sound minds, while they learn in conducive environments”

He applauded the partnership and collaboration between the Oyo State Health Insurance Agency, OYSHIA and the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board, OYOSUBEB, in providing healthcare opportunities to public school children in the State.

“This event is a collective effort in securing a brighter future of Oyo State pupils,” he said.

The Deputy Governor also charged OYSHIA to double its efforts in extending the scheme to every school in the State, urging parents and guardians to key into the scheme.

In her goodwill message, the Chief of UNICEF Lagos Field Office, Ms. Celine Lafoucriere, noted that the launch of the Oyo State Public Primary School Pupils Health Insurance Scheme, will give access to affordable, quality healthcare; a fundamental right for every child.

“This initiative reinforces our collective commitment to universal health coverage, ensuring that no child faces financial obstacles to accessing healthcare”, she said.

“Universal health coverage is more than a healthcare goal—it’s a social and economic necessity. When children have access to healthcare, they can focus on education, grow into productive adults, break the cycle of poverty, and contribute to the success of Oyo State and Nigeria.”

“This scheme exemplifies this by focusing on public primary school children, especially in hard-to-reach areas. With 90 schools already enrolled across 18 LGAs, our goal is to ensure all 33 LGAs in Oyo State are covered, leaving no child behind.”

“UNICEF remains steadfast in supporting the Government and communities toward universal health coverage.”

The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi applauded OYSHIA and OYOSUBEB for their commitment towards healthy basic school pupils.

She assured the agencies of her Ministry’s unparalleled commitment to the scheme.

Also speaking, the Executive Chairman, OYOSUBEB, Dr. Nureni Aderemi Adeniran applauded OYSHIA, pledging the Board’s commitment to the smooth take-off and sustainability of the scheme.

Adeniran said, “At OYOSUBEB, we operate on the principle of taking care of the pupils under our care as though they are ours”.

Dr. Adeniran added that the scheme would enable the beneficiaries to receive quality healthcare without paying exorbitantly to access it.

Earlier, the Executive Secretary, OYSHIA, Dr. Olusola Akande said the new door being opened today, is focusing on providing access to healthcare for 10,000 public primary school pupils in the first instance.

Dr. Akande noted that the agency will also commence an enrollment of additional 5,500 pupils into the scheme from next week.

The Executive Secretary applauded UNICEF, through whose support the Agency has been able to improve on its awareness campaign and increased the communities under Community Based Health Insurance scheme by 100 percent.

He equally stressed the unparalleled commitment of SUBEB chairman to the scheme.

“His open door policy and unrestricted access ensured we were able to keep to our time line”, he said.

The event was attended by relevant stakeholders in the health and education sectors, including the pupils.

The Oyo State Government has said that the distribution of letters of appointment to 5,600 newly recruited basic school teachers in the State will begin on Monday, January 6, 2025.

The distribution exercise will take place at Local government Universal Basic Education Authorities, LGUBEAs situated in all local government areas across Oyo State.

The Chairman, Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board, Dr. Nureni Aderemi Adeniran stated this today during a meeting with Education Secretaries in Ibadan.

Dr. Adeniran charged the new teachers to be innovative and embrace modern techniques and approach in imparting knowledge.

Adeniran, who restated the Board’s zero tolerance for examination malpractices, said the new teachers’ appointments take effect from January 1st, 2025.

He, however, noted that about 12 local governments are overbloated with teachers, while some local governments are understaffed, saying a redistribution will be done to ensure equity and justice.

Dr. Adeniran urged the newly recruited teachers to display patriotic commitment, high level of integrity, and professional diligence to your duties.

“As young teachers, you are expected to be creative, adaptive, talented, and progressive. We urge you to be innovative, I therefore urge you to be the teacher for this age and the game-changing teacher for the future,” he said.

“You will be expected to be part of our dream for the revolutionalize the basic education sub-sector”, the Chairman added.

Speaking further, he said, “This is yet another testimony in our quest to reposition basic education in Oyo State in line with Governor Seyi Makinde’s campaign promises to our people, especially in the rural areas, many of which, have shortage of teachers as a result of retirements and other issues.”

“The first batch of 5,600 newly recruited teachers out of 7,000 who were successful after the rigorous recruitment processes will receive their letters from Monday.”

Adeniran also disclosed that the Seyi Makinde Government has paid N2.5 Billion as counterpart fund for the 2022 & 2023 UBEC/SUBEB intervention projects, to enable basic schools and junior secondary schools to continue enjoying unhindered infrastructural development.

While congratulating the new teachers, the Chairman advised them to demonstrate the highest level of professional ethics, urging them not to fail in their professional code of conduct as teachers.

The Chairman commended Governor Seyi Makinde for approving the appointment to fill vacant position in the education industry, stating that his intervention in the sub-sector has placed Oyo in the forefront among its peers.

…As Kenyan Firm Trains Teachers, Gifts Them Androids, Teaching Materials

The UBEC-SUBEB Model Smart School in Ibadan will hold its entrance examinations for Early Childhood Care Development Education, ECCDE, Primary and Computer Based Test, CBT, for Junior Secondary School levels on September 14, 2024.

Speaking in Ibadan, the Executive Chairman, Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board, OYOSUBEB, Dr. Nureni Aderemi Adeniran said the board expects a large turnout of prospective learners.

The Model Smart School, located at Sogunro, Ibadan is co-owned by the Universal Basic Education Commission and the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board.

Adeniran said the exercise will see the children attempting the examination on devices provided by the smart school.

Dr. Adeniran emphasised that “the prestigious UBEC-SUBEB Model Smart School offers free and quality basic education”.

He urged parents to take full advantage of opportunity presented by the school “which is committed to equipping students with 21st-century skills through its modern computer gadgets and innovative teaching methods.”

Dr. Adeniran said officers from the Universal Basic Education Commission, UBEC, will also be present at the centre to observe the CBT exam.

Adeniran who said some parents have registered their children via www.oyostatesmartschool.com, urged other interested parents to register their children before the examination date.

Meanwhile, Dr. Adeniran has expressed satisfaction with the smooth conduct of the just concluded EIDU pilot programme for 25 staff of the board.

The programme, attended by selected Head teachers, class teachers and Quality Assurance officers from Ona-ara, Iseyin, Ogbomoso South, and Ibadan South West, is aimed at equipping them with necessary digital skills, in preparation for the new session.

Applauding EIDU Digital Learning Programme organisers, he said, “This intervention program will ensure we improve the manner with which we teach our pupils”.

The Senior Education Officer, EIDU, Mr. Silas Armandos said the participants are expected to apply what they have learnt in schools.

He revealed that the participants will go back to classes with Android phones, and relevant teaching materials.
